Athletics and Mascot
category: Main Page,
Wolves have traditionally been a symbol of strong hunters, or noble providers of wisdom. Their use of teamwork to bring their prey down is the perfect metaphor for how the WOU athletic department works together.
The WOU athletic mascot, the wolf, was instated in 1928 (although the school had been participating athletically since 1856). The wolf mascot was originally suggested because the football coach at the time was Larry Wolfe. The newly minted mascot was originally called Waldo Wolfe, which was a combination of both Larry Wolfe and another athletic coach, Waldo Zeller, names. In 1928, Wolfe put together a very skillful and successful football team, and as a result the name “Wolves” quickly spread throughout the athletic department.
Today’s mascot, whose name has been shortened to Wolfie, can be seen at all the football games and other campus functions.
Today’s athletic program competes at the NCAA Division II level (the only college in Oregon at this level). There are 13 intercollegiate sports at WOU, including football, women’s volleyball, women’s soccer, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, women’s basketball, men’s basketball, men’s indoor track, women’s outdoor track, baseball, softball, men’s outdoor track and women’s outdoor track.
Several of WOU’s alumni boast successful athlete careers. Kevin Boss, a former WOU football tight end, was drafted by the New York Giants and played in the 2008 Superbowl. Nalacey Porter, a member of the traveling track team, competed in the Paralympics in Athens, Greece in 2004.
There are also several athletic clubs that compete against other universities. They include men’s soccer, water polo, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s rugby, and a wrestling club.
Intramural sports are also very popular at WOU. Over 70 sports activities are offered, including the expected basketball, volleyball and soccer, to the more obscure, like golf and racquetball. All are welcome to compete, regardless of skill or experience. It’s about having fun and participating.
The thrill of competing, the sense of community, and the dedication of the players are some of the reasons the athletic department at WOU is so appealing.
Go wolves!
