Financial Aid Tution Promise
category: Main Page,
It is Western Oregon University’s belief that education should be made available to everyone. A bachelor’s degree can open doors to many opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach, including higher paying jobs and higher education. With hard work and commitment, there is no reason why every person in the United States shouldn’t take part in this life-changing experience.
It is with these ideas in mind that Western has made funding and financial assistance easy. So easy, in fact, that 73% of students at WOU are presently receiving financial aid. This comes in many packages—some loans, some scholarships—but regardless of the shape it takes, the Western Oregon University Office of Financial Aid is doing everything they can to make dreams come true.
WOU offers several scholarships of varying amounts to incoming students from both high schools and other transfer institutions. The WOU Presidential scholarship gives anywhere from $1,000 - $3,500 to high school students who meet the diligent requirements; this is renewable for up to four years, which means $4,000 to $14,000 off of the total cost of college. Transfer students can be awarded the Provost Transfer Scholarship which gives $1,000 per year for up to two years. These a just a few examples among many. Scholarships and awards are available for outstanding students in nearly every discipline—the Arts, Sciences, and Humanities. Best of all, prospective students who apply for Western Oregon’s General Scholarships can be awarded from $250 to $5,500 based on a wide range of criteria—and students re-apply every year!
Aside from the thousands of dollars available to students for free each year, WOU has several other opportunities for prospective attendees to help ease the burden of college cost. Many students now attending Western Oregon take part in any number of loan programs; from student loans to parent PLUS loans, Western makes it easy to attend school now and pay for it when the time comes—after graduation.
Finally, even though scholarships and loans can really take a bite out of the university price tag, these is one feature very unique to Western Oregon University that really makes going to college a possibility: the WOU Tuition Promise. The Tuition Promise is a program that began in 2007 for every Western student. Its purpose? To give students and parents a guaranteed price for every class, every term—a price that will never change. Think of it as everyday low prices at a grocery store—the Tuition Promise allows WOU to guarantee a lower cost every day (a cost that be even further reduced with coupons—that is, scholarships). Incoming students at Western Oregon are automatically enrolled in this special program (the only one of its kind in the western United States).
When a student begins her freshman year at WOU, she will pay one price per credit, per term. For the next four years, she can be certain that the price the she paid that first term is never going to change. This allows three major benefits: a fixed price plan for four years, incentive to graduate in four years, and (most importantly) an overall reduced price compared to universities in Oregon and across the country. The tuition increase from the 2007-08 school year to the 2010-11 school year is estimated at $5,200 for Oregon private institutions and $2,300 for other public universities in the Oregon University System. The estimated cost increase at Western? Zero. The WOU Tuition Promise can be extended beyond four years for students with a legitimate need, including participation in a major program requiring a fifth year, or participation in study abroad.
All told, the Tuition Promise is a deal unlike any other, and has been put in place—along with many other financial aid opportunities—to ensure a healthy, happy student population at Western Oregon University.
