Piano & Collaborative Piano

category: Music Department

The Western Oregon University collaborative piano program is both rigorous and rewarding, with the highest caliber of instruction. Professor Diane Baxter, Ph. D., combines a strict discipline of study with a warm friendly environment. For example, all lessons are videotaped and students are required to keep a mandatory journal to log self observation of the videos. On the other hand, regular seminars are a warm and friendly environment to gain performance experience with no criticism allowed.

Collaborative piano is major portion of the course of study and students are encouraged to seek out collaboration with other musicians. In addition, opportunities are created for the students to perform outside of the school setting. These include opportunities in Oregon and also study abroad.

Piano students learn the art of accompaniment as members of ensembles such as choir, jazz, big band, small combos, and chamber groups. In addition, piano students collaborate with vocal students taking private singing lessons. The piano school gives opportunities to work with other keyboard instruments. Membership in the Early Music Consort gives ample opportunity to play on a harpsichord that was built using sixteenth century crafting techniques, including the process by which the strings are made.

Keyboard synthesizers and their application are also included in the curriculum at Western Oregon University. For students wishing to make a career of playing piano, Portland, Oregon is nearby with a vast eclectic music scene that features a myriad of quality jazz groups, a thriving classical scene, and a very hot popular music scene. As part of this comprehensive Oregon music school the successful pianist also receives important career training in the business of music.
