Western Oregon University stands out among conducting colleges and conducting universities because professors Dr. Solveig Holmquist and Dr. Ike Nail give a hands-on approach to their conducting studies providing pupils with an opportunity of conducting music department performances. In the Western Oregon University music conducting program, the student selects a piece of repertoire he or she would like to perform and an ensemble-choral or instrumental-with whom to collaborate. Together student and professor dig into the piece until the student is ready to begin conducting university ensembles and bring the music to fruition in performance.

The conducting school curriculum includes an introductory conducting study class along with basic choral and instrumental conducting in which students learn fundamental conducting school's gestures and vocabulary, how to approach a score, and gain a knowledge of the literature. Music history and theory courses are also required to provide a wider musical background for conducting music school students.

Those wishing to continue in the school of choral conducting continue private lessons under Dr. Solveig Holmquist, who recently returned from a quarter of conducting college choirs at four universities in China. Supplemental choral conducting university courses include choral methods and choral literature.

Those who choose to pursue instrumental conducting will continue private lessons with Grammy-winning Dr. Ike Nail. Other school of conducting classes include pedagogy courses to increase students' working knowledge of orchestral strings and other instruments.
