Music Recording Technology

category: Music Department

The Western Oregon University Music Department began offering a major in recording technology in 2006 and is rapidly becoming one of the best recording programs in the state.

Many of the WOU music faculty are active recording artists that record in their home recording studios and large professional studios. With their extensive experience, recording students have an opportunity to take private lessons and garner a wide range of experience. The WOU faculty provide real world guidance for early and intermediate level of recording, then enlist top industry instruction for more advanced students with Mike Moore of Dead Thelma's Recording Studio in Portland, Oregon.

While WOU recording engineers gain credible instruction in recording techniques, mixing and mastering, WOU faculty offer something that many recording students won't find elsewhere. For example, faculty are highly skilled with signal processing programming tools, such as MAX/MSP/JITTER, with other instructors provide guidance in the use of a variety of complex software synths, such as Reason. In related class work, students also learn techniques for complex audio processing using programs such as PEAK PRO XT. Imagine designing your own synth, creating your own sound libraries and understanding how to create the perfect sound effects for music composition or video.

Recording students have many opportunities to practice their skills in recording fellow students, school ensembles and by inviting outside groups for recording at WOU. By the end of your recording technology studies, you will have a wide variety of experience from recording rock bands, to string quartets, in both studio and live performance environments.

In addition to the recording program, numerous groups, such a the big band, record full lenght albums on a regular basis.
