Orchestra Strings
category: Music Department,
The Western Oregon Music Department offers one of the best orchestra strings programs for those desiring performance opportunities in violin, viola, cello, and bass.
In addition to more "classical" orchestra configurations, the Western Music Department has a highly acclaimed Early Music Consort, with the most extensive collection of period instruments of any school in the Northwest. This Oregon early music group is led by Dr. Keller Coker, who studied extensively with legendary Jim Tyler. In addition to providing outstanding training for early music, the music school attracts world class early music groups, such as the Portland Baroque Orchestra and Baroque Northwest.
For later periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern) orchestra strings students enjoy performance opportunities, such as solo concertos. It appears that the Music Department professors want all hard working students to get top performance opportunities - unlike many schools where the TOP student always gets all the solos and everyone else is left as "second fiddle," so to speak.
